Japanese are so fussy about things being "clean" that a full-out strip of the walls and floors is common every 2-4 years. There's no point in putting in good quality when you know that it will have to be totally removed so frequently. And yet there are other buildings that last hundreds of years. And, of course, they can build skyscrapers that can withstand huge earthquakes!
